Dry Van vs Reefer: Tare Weight and Payload
A dry van and a reefer look like the same 53-foot box from the dock, but they do not weigh the same empty — and that difference comes straight out of how much freight you can legally haul. This guide covers typical tare weights for both, why the reefer gives up payload, and what that means when the load is heavy. The figures here are conservative, commonly quoted ranges: individual trailers vary by manufacturer, spec and age, so weigh your own equipment rather than trusting anyone's averages, including these.
Typical tare weights
- 53′ dry van: commonly quoted around 13,000–15,000 lb empty. Lightweight specs come in under that; older or heavily specced trailers over.
- 53′ reefer: commonly quoted around 15,000–17,000 lb empty, before fuel in the reefer tank. The insulated walls and floor, the refrigeration unit (roughly 2,000 lb by itself) and its fuel typically add a few thousand pounds over a comparable dry van.
- Tractor: a typical sleeper tractor runs roughly 17,000–20,000 lb with fuel and driver, which is the other big piece of the empty weight.
Put together, an empty van rig commonly sits somewhere near 31,000–34,000 lb and an empty reefer rig near 33,000–36,000 lb. Against the 80,000 lb federal gross limit, that leaves a practical payload in the neighborhood of 44,000–48,000 lb for a dry van and 42,000–45,000 lb for a reefer — again, ranges, not promises. The scale ticket for your actual rig is the only number that matters.
Why the reefer gives up payload
Everything that makes a reefer a reefer weighs something. The insulation package thickens the walls, roof and floor; the duct floor and air chute add material; the refrigeration unit hangs a big diesel-powered machine on the nose; and its fuel tank carries up to around 50 gallons of diesel. None of it hauls freight, and all of it counts toward gross. That is the whole trade: temperature control in exchange for two or three thousand pounds of payload.
The unit's position matters too, not just its weight. Because the refrigeration unit and its fuel hang at the very front of the trailer, that weight loads the kingpin — which means the tractor's drive axles feel it. A reefer starts the day with less drive-axle headroom than a dry van, before the first pallet goes on.
What it means when you load
On light freight, none of this matters — 20,000 lb of chips scales legal in anything. The difference shows up on heavy loads:
- Know the payload ceiling before you book. A 45,000 lb load that is routine in a lightweight dry van can be borderline or flatly illegal in a reefer. Produce and other food-grade freight often books right at the heavy edge, which is exactly where the reefer's extra tare bites.
- Watch the drives, not just the gross. With the reefer unit already pressing on the kingpin, a nose-heavy load pattern that a dry van tolerates can put a reefer's drives over 34,000 lb while gross is still legal. - Fuel is weight on both ends. A full reefer tank is several hundred pounds, and the tractor's own fuel (roughly 7 lb per gallon) lands mostly on steer and drives. Crews that scale borderline loads right after fueling everything to the brim are choosing the worst-case reading — sometimes that is exactly the honest thing to do.
What moves the tare inside those ranges
Two trailers with the same length and the same badge can weigh a thousand pounds apart, and the spec sheet explains why. Aluminum roofs, posts and wheels pull tare down; steel wheels, heavy-duty flooring packages and liftgates push it up. On reefers, the insulation package itself varies — heavier foam for deep-frozen work costs payload — and an older unit with a full fuel tank weighs meaningfully more than a new lightweight unit running half full. Fleet spec sheets list an empty weight, but the honest number is the one on a scale ticket with your actual tractor, full of fuel, hooked to that actual trailer. Weigh the empty combination once and write it down: every load plan you build afterward inherits that accuracy.
Planning the difference instead of discovering it
The math is simple but tedious: tare, unit weight, fuel, pallet weights, and where along the floor each pallet sits, checked against the steer, drive and tandem limits from our US axle weight limits guide.
